JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Leadership through Sport plays a critical role in advancing Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley’s goals around youth health, well-being, leadership and workforce readiness through the AZ PLAYS initiative. This position is responsible for building the infrastructure needed to expand youth access to positive sports experiences, including sports industry leadership opportunities and a robust sport internship workforce pathway. The Director of Leadership through Sport will focus on developing and strengthening sustainable partnerships—both internally and with community organizations—to support and grow play and sports-based programming across Clubhouses.

 The Director of Leadership through Sport will ensure the successful implementation of high-quality programs that engage youth through sports, promote leadership development, and connect participants to the broader Arizona sports community.

JOB RESPONSBILITIES

  • Collaborates with the Director of Training, Program & Quality in creating the vision, planning, and implementation of AZ PLAYS across Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley

 

  • Collaborates with Club leadership to integrate AZ PLAYS into site programming and culture

 

  • Develops and manages a teen/member Leadership Council to co-design and evaluate AZ PLAYS and AZ Plays Industry Club initiatives

 

  • Serves as co-lead for the AZ PLAYS Taskforce, along with CDO & VP External Affairs, working with community partners to guide strategic direction and implementation

 

  • Engages the Aspen Institute to support data tracking, evaluation, and community-wide initiatives focused on youth sports in the greater Phoenix area

 

  • Crafts long-term vision and implementation plans to expand AZ PLAYS by engaging other youth sports agencies and organizations across Arizona

 

  • Builds and maintains relationships with school districts, community organizations, and sports partners

 

  • Identifies and secures internship opportunities in sports and event management for AZ Plays teens

 

  • Supports rental agreements with external groups to utilize Club sport facilities

 

  • Creates and manages coaching and referee academies that train and place teens in paid roles to support BGCAZ’s AZ Plays infrastructure within Clubs

 

  • Creates and manages sports operation internship opportunities to support BGCAZ sport facility rentals

 

  • Engages high school and college athletes as mentors, coaches, and program ambassadors

 

  • Assists with the design and coordination of Club-wide sports tournaments and seasonal leagues. 

 

  • Develops relationships with college athletes to promote and brand AZ PLAYS across their social media platforms, amplifying visibility and engagement

 

  • Identifies and organizes opportunities for youth to attend local sports events and experiences

 

  • Ensures all programming aligns with youth development best practices and safety standards 

 

  • Tracks program outcomes and impact metrics

 

  • Provides regular reports to Operation and AZYouthforce leadership and funding partners

 

  • Encourages BGCAZ “Rules of Engagement” and incorporates into day-to-day interactions with staff  

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE, LICENSURE and CERTIFICATION

  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • 5 years of experience in youth programming, sports administration, or nonprofit leadership

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY and SKILLS

  • Proven ability to build partnerships and manage cross-sector collaborations
  • Experience designing and implementing youth workforce development or sports-based programs
  • Strong organizational, communication and leadership skills
  • Passion for youth empowerment and community engagement
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, coordinate and direct multiple activities with varied deadlines and deliver in a     timely manner

WORKING CONDITIONS and DRIVING

  • Travel between BGCAZ Branches, schools and community sites is required
  • Work is performed in our Program Services Center-Administrative offices
