Project Achieve Specialist 

AmeriCorps National Service 

 

Time Required: 

  • Mon – Fri from 8:00am-4:30pm; hours may vary 

 

Service Description:

BGCAZ is dedicated to addressing the equity gap by increasing youth and teen social emotional learning and academic success opportunities. This position assists BGCAZ in making progress towards improving consistency and quality around academic success programming, which directly affects BGCAZ’s ability to provide premier out-of-school time programming.

 

The AmeriCorps Service Objectives for this position include: (1) providing academic support and adult connection for youth and teens; (2) tracking and reporting on the short-term measureable outcomes of BGCAZ’s Project Achieve. This position is supported by the Branch Director, the Branch Program Director, BGCAZ’s Program Manager-Academic Success, and BGCAZ’s Volunteer Services Manager.

                 

Duties / Expectations: 

The AmeriCorps member is expected to: 

  • Build partnerships between families, schools and Clubs for the benefit of Project Achieve participants.
  • Provide academic remediation to Project Achieve participants to include one-on-one tutoring for 45-60 minutes daily with at least 30 hours of individualized instruction during the program year.
  • Provide individual and small group mentoring.
  • Ensure that Project Achieve participants have focused time allotted to reading, writing, STEM projects, goal setting and team-building activities.
  • Monitor Project Achieve participant’s school and club attendance in conjunction with an established agreement with the youth/teen’s family.
  • Monitor Project Achieve participant’s academic achievement and grade progression over the project year.
  • Recruit additional volunteers.

 

Qualifications & Skills:   

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor youth and/or teens
  • Demonstrated ability to provide academic remediation to youth and/or teens
  • Ability to take direction well
  • Ability to work independently 
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced, noisy environment
  • Prior experience working with groups of youth and/or teens highly desired

 

Additionally, the national service member needs to successfully complete the following:

  • AmeriCorps application process, including fingerprinting – no cost for fingerprinting
  • BGCAZ volunteer placement and onboarding processes, including BGCAZ background check – no cost for background check
  • BGCAZ New Hire Orientation
  • Project Achieve program training 

 

Location: Various BGCAZ Branch locations throughout Maricopa County
